Where to Buy a Coil Line: What Distance Really Costs

Sooner or later, buying a coil processing line raises the same question: a nearby manufacturer, or the Far East? Asking it as "whose machine is better" is the wrong framing — nobody can answer that impartially. The right question is: what is distance costing you?

That question has an answer, and it does not rest on quality claims. It rests on measurable things: the customs regime, freight time, whether you can attend the acceptance test, how fast a service engineer can reach you, how many days a spare part takes. We go through them one by one below — and, at the end, the cases where distance genuinely does not matter.

1. The customs regime — the item most often missed#

The Customs Union between Türkiye and the European Union, in force since 1995, covers industrial products. Machinery falls within it, so a line shipped from Türkiye to the EU is not subject to customs duty.

A machine arriving from outside the Union is subject to the Common Customs Tariff and to any trade measures in force. The point here is not the rate — rates depend on the tariff code and on measures in effect, and it is a question to put to your own importer while you are collecting quotations. The point is this: of the two figures you are comparing, one may be ex-works and the other delivered to your plant. They are not the same number.

Practical rule: compare every quotation on landed cost — machine plus freight plus insurance plus duty plus inland transport.

2. Freight time and mode#

A coil line is too heavy and too bulky for air freight; in practice it travels by road or by sea.

Road freight from Türkiye to Europe is measured in days. Sea freight from the Far East to Europe runs to weeks port to port, with port handling and inland transport on top. That difference is not in itself good or bad — if you can plan around it, it is not a problem. The problem is a freight time that was never built into your project schedule.

The question to ask: is there a fixed date by which the line must be commissioned and producing, and was the shipping window calculated backwards from it?

3. Factory acceptance (FAT) — will you actually be there?#

This is the most concrete effect of distance, and usually the least discussed.

A factory acceptance test means the line is run with your own material, and shown to you, before it ships. On paper every quotation includes a FAT. The difference lies in whether the test actually happens — and that depends on whether you can get there.

From most European cities Istanbul is a direct flight of a few hours; an acceptance test fits into a one- or two-day trip. The same visit to the Far East is a different scale in flight time, visa process and calendar. The consequence is predictable: where travel is hard, the FAT tends to become a video recording. A video does not show that the line runs with your material.

Ask this: how many people will attend the FAT, how many days will it take, with which material and against which acceptance criteria? Get the answer in writing.

4. Commissioning and service access#

The job does not end when the machine arrives; that is when it starts. How quickly a commissioning team can be on site depends on distance and on the visa process — and that cuts in every direction. An engineer travelling from Türkiye to the EU goes through a visa process too, as does one travelling from the Far East.

So set the question of origin aside and ask directly:

  • In a breakdown, within how many days can a field team be at my plant?
  • Does that figure include visas?
  • Can a fault be diagnosed remotely — is there external access to the control system?

The third question is the cheapest insurance you can buy: remote diagnosis removes a large share of the situations that would otherwise require someone to travel.

5. Spare parts — the real cost is downtime#

With spare parts, the expensive thing is not the part. It is the downtime.

The arithmetic is simple: if your line processes a given tonnage per day, three weeks down means three weeks of that tonnage's added value. The wait for a critical bearing or hydraulic component is in direct proportion to distance and customs handling. The price of the part disappears inside that picture.

What to ask for at quotation stage: a critical spare parts list with a lead time against each item. Items held in stock and items made to order should be listed separately. A supplier who will not provide that list has transferred the downtime risk to you.

6. Time zone and remote support#

A small-looking item that is felt daily. Istanbul is one to two hours from Central Europe, so working hours overlap almost entirely. The Far East is six to seven hours away, and the overlapping window shrinks to a couple of hours.

That is what decides whether the answer arrives the same day or the next one when the line stops.

7. Conformity responsibility — the most skipped clause#

If the machine is going into the EU, who carries conformity (CE) responsibility must be explicit in the contract. Where the manufacturer sits outside the EU, part of the obligation passes to the importer — which usually means you. EU machinery legislation is currently being renewed; have the manufacturer confirm which framework applies to your delivery date.

Questions to ask: who signs the declaration of conformity, who holds the technical file, and is there an authorised representative in the EU?

Where the Far East genuinely wins#

This section is what makes the article honest. There are cases where distance stops mattering:

  • You are buying a standard, catalogue machine. Where no bespoke engineering is involved, the FAT carries less weight.
  • You can absorb a long lead time. If your calendar has slack, weeks are not a problem.
  • Your own technical team is strong. If you can commission and maintain in-house, service distance hurts less.
  • You are buying many identical machines. Scale dissolves the per-unit logistics and travel cost.

If all four are true for you, distance really is secondary and the decision comes down to price.

There is no single right answer to "where should I buy"; it depends on your production pattern. But the way to compare correctly is settled: put landed cost and the risk distance creates side by side — not ex-works prices.
