What Does a Roll Forming Line Cost? The 8 Items That Set the Price

Short answer

Eight items set the price of a roll forming line: the section and the number of forming stations it needs, sheet thickness and material, profile width, whether holes are punched in line, the cut-off type, the roll tooling and how many profiles it has to make, the level of automation at both ends of the line, and the control architecture. Freight, foundation, commissioning and spares rarely appear in a quotation. To budget realistically you need the profile drawing, the thickness range, the material, a target speed and the annual quantity.

What Does a Roll Forming Line Cost? The 8 Items That Set the Price

There is no price list in this article, and there cannot be one for a roll forming line. What sets the price is not the name of the machine but the profile you intend to make. The same words, "trapezoidal sheet machine", can describe two lines that are far apart in cost, depending on the depth of the section and the number of bends in it.

The eight items below explain where the difference between quotations comes from. At the end there are the costs a quotation usually leaves out, and a way to put competing offers on the same footing.

1. The section and the number of stations#

Roll forming does not bend the sheet in one go; it bends it step by step. Each step is a station, and each station means a pair of rolls, a shaft, bearings and a share of the drive.

A simple U section is finished in a few stations. A deep channel, a return bend or an interlocking profile needs many more. Across our lines the station count runs from 12 to 30 depending on the profile, and that range is the single biggest step in the price.

The practical rule: send the drawing and let engineering give the station count. A number quoted without the drawing is a guess.

2. Sheet thickness and material#

As thickness rises so does forming force, and force sets shaft diameter, bearings, frame thickness and motor power. A 0.3 mm façade sheet and a 5 mm rack upright do not belong on the same line.

Material matters as much as thickness: high strength steel needs more force at the same thickness, stainless needs different roll surfaces to protect the finish, and galvanised sheet needs pressure set so the coating survives forming.

When you ask for a quotation, give the thickness range and the material together. "2 mm" on its own is incomplete.

3. Profile width#

Width increases the span of the shaft. As the span grows the shaft deflects, and the way to stop deflection is a larger diameter, which means more material and more machining through every station.

So buying a line wider than you need costs more than buying one faster than you need. Take your widest profile today, add a margin, and stop there.

4. Is there punching in the line?#

Mounting holes, cable openings, drainage slots: they are punched either in the line or afterwards on a press. In the line means a servo punch station, a die and a measuring system, with the feed controlled separately so hole position holds along the length.

That is the item that raises the price, and its alternative is a second machine and a second operator. Decide it on how much of your work is actually perforated.

5. The cut-off#

Three options, three prices:

  • Stop-and-cut: the line stops, cuts, accelerates. The most economical; it lengthens cycle time.
  • Flying shear: cuts at line speed. Expensive mechanically and in the controls, and it pays for itself at high volume.
  • Die cut-off: a shaped cut matching the section. The die is a separate investment.

6. Roll tooling: one line, more than one tool set#

The line is the frame; the tooling is the profile. When you move to a second section, what you buy is tooling, not a line.

Three things set the price of a tool set: the number of stations, the roll material and its surface treatment such as hardening or chrome plating, and whether the change system is quick-change or conventional. Say how many profiles you need at the start; every set added later is priced on its own.

7. Automation at both ends#

The two ends of the line quietly move the price:

  • Entry: decoiler capacity, loading car, automatic edge guiding, straightening unit.
  • Exit: automatic stacking, counted bundles, packing and labelling.

Manual stacking is the step that limits line speed and adds damage risk; an automatic stacker removes it but raises the investment. If your line really is to run at 40 m/min, exit automation is not a preference but a requirement.

8. Control architecture and brand#

The PLC and drive brand, the level of the operator panel, how many recipes it holds, remote access and fault logging. The real question here is not the brand but the service: does that brand have a distributor and spare stock in your country? A brand nobody stocks nearby turns a small fault into a week of downtime.

Four items a quotation leaves out#

  1. Freight and insurance — a line can be out-of-gauge cargo.
  2. Foundation and services — concrete, electrical supply and panel, compressed air.
  3. Commissioning and training — how many people, how many days, in which language.
  4. Critical spare parts — roll bearings, a servo drive, sensors.

Not being written in the quotation does not make them disappear. It only keeps them out of your budget.

Six lines have to be defined the same way in every offer. If they are not, what you are comparing is not price but uncertainty:

Frequently asked questions

Why is there no catalogue price for a roll forming line?

The profile sets the price, not the name of the machine. Two sections of the same width can need a 14-station line and a 26-station line, depending on how many bends they have and how deep the section is, and that difference runs through the tooling, the frame length and the motor power. This is why no serious quotation is issued before the drawing is seen.

How much does in-line punching change the cost?

It turns a machine into a production cell: a servo punch station, the die, its own hydraulic or servo drive, and a measuring system that holds hole position along the length. The alternative is punching afterwards on a press, which is a second machine, a second operator and a second handling step.

Flying shear or stop-and-cut?

Stop-and-cut is cheaper: the line stops, cuts and accelerates again. A flying shear cuts at line speed, so it shortens cycle time, but it is expensive mechanically and in the control system. The decision follows quantity: for short runs stopping is sensible, for high volumes the seconds lost pay for the shear.

Why is roll tooling a separate budget line?

The line is the frame; the tooling is the product. When you add a second profile you are buying tooling, not another line. Say at the quotation stage how many profiles the line has to make: a line delivered with three tool sets is not priced like a line with one.
